SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Fresno State (3-4) won its second in a row downing Cal Poly (8-6-1) 14-7. The Bulldogs came back from a 6-2 deficit to grab one final win before opening their home schedule against top-ranked Stanford this weekend.
FS scored 12 runs in the final three innings, capitalizing on Mustang errors and timely hitting.
"We hung in there. We weren't hitting the ball well in the beginning of the ballgame and our pitching looked a little ragged, but Hernandez came in and did a good job and our hitting came around," said Coach Bennett.
Fresno State scored a season-high 14 runs in the game, led by senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White (Berkeley, Calif.), who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Riday-White hit safely in his fourth consecutive game and raised his WAC-leading batting average to .500.
The Mustangs built a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning on four hits and two Bulldog errors. Shortstop Scott Anderson singled off senior RHP Zach Minor (Walnut Creek, Calif.), who started the game, to drive in a run.
That would end Minor's day and bring in sophomore LHP Mike Hernandez (Fresno, Calif.). Hernandez quieted the storm and went on to pitch the rest of the game and pick up his first win of the year.
"I felt good today. I knew after my last two outings something had to change. I made those changes and got good results today," said Hernandez.
Fresno State put the game out of reach in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on three hits and three Cal Poly errors. Sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee (Aptos, Calif.) and Riday-White both had RBI hits in the inning. McGehee would finish with two RBIs on the day going 2-for-5.
"We had a couple of good at-bats that were key in the sixth inning. [Freshman Jordan] Prieto (Clovis, Calif.), [junior Scott] Beshears (Fresno, Calif.) and McGehee had good at-bats in that inning," said Bennett.
Beshears and Prieto, who both pinched hit in the inning, worked pitching counts in their favor to get on base on a walk and throwing error, respectively.
Up next, Fresno State will open its home schedule against Stanford for a three-game set starting Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:05 p.m.
