POWAY, Calif. - Fresno State improved to 3-0 in the Campbell/Cartier Tournament after picking up a 4-0 win over UC Santa Barbara.
The Bulldogs, who scored four runs on five hits, had another outstanding pitching performance from freshman right-hander Jamie Southern.
Southern tossed a three-hitter and struck out five to improve to 6-0 on the year while notching her fifth shutout.
Fresno State (6-2) scored one run in the first and added three in the top of the seventh against the Gauchos, who fell to 6-8 on the year.
In the first inning with two outs, Southern doubled down the right field foul line before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti roped a shot to right center to score Southern.
In the seventh with one out, Fossatti walked before sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. Sophmore second baseman Pam Perez doubled to left center to score Fossatti as Hoffman went to third. After getting junior catcher Pam West to pop up, freshman shorstop Leticia Pacheco singled up the middle to score Hoffman and Perez.
Fresno State, on a four-game win streak, meets CS Northridge in the night cap (8:30 p.m.).
