TEMPE, Ariz. - Fresno State could not get its offense generated and the Bulldogs paid the price as they dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 8 Arizona State in the ASU Fiesta Bowl Tournament.
The Bulldogs, who played their third Top 10 team in four games, mustered one hit off ASU left-hander Erica Beach as the Sun Devils improved to 4-0 on the season.
Dropping to 2-2 on the year, Fresno State got its lone hit from sophomore second baseman Pam Perez. Perez is hitting a blistering .625 (5-8) with a run and two RBI through the first four games.
Sophomore southpaw Lori Hoffmam suffered the loss as she gave up two runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern pitched the remaining 2.2 innings and scattered three hits and struck out two. Southern extended her scoreless innings pitch streak to 31.1 dating back to last season.
"We let their pitcher take control of the game," head coach Margie Wright said. "We need to do a better job of taking charge. This is our first weekend of competition and we have had very positive experiences. We knew our first weekend was going to be extremely tough but that's what it takes to be a very good team. We're looking forward to close out tournament play on a positive note."
Fresno State (2-2) will conclude tourney action against Texas Tech (3-6) tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. (MST).
