FRESNO, Calif. - No. 10 Fresno State worked quickly and efficiently as the Bulldogs collected a 4-0 victory over Tennessee Tech in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Bulldog Diamond.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern tallied her second no-hitter in her last five starts as she faced one batter over the minimum after walking one and striking out seven. Southern, who improved to 14-3 on the season, recorded her 10th shutout victory and recorded the program's 53rd no-hitter.
Senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple and Southern led the Bulldogs with two hits apiece while sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman had two of the team's three RBI.
In a game that lasted 1:21, Fresno State scored four runs on seven hits.
The Bulldogs posted a run in the third, one in the fourth and tacked on two in the fifth for the team's 21st win on the season.
In the third with one out, senior second baseman Vanessa Czarnecki walked before Southern lined a single up the middle. With runners on first and second, senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti walked to load the bases. Hoffman then hit an opposite field sacrifice fly to score Czarnecki.
In the fourth, sophomore shorststop Pam Perez led the inning off with a double down the left field line. After junior catcher Pam West sacrificed Perez to third, senior designated player Lashme Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Perez.
In the fifth, Whipple singled to right field to start the inning off. Czarnecki sacrificed Whipple to second. Southern notched an infield single as Whipple went to third. With one out and Southern advancing to second, Hoffman singled to left field as Whipple scored. Perez then reached safely on an error by the Golden Eagles second baseman and Southern crossed home plate.
Head coach Margie Wright, who picked up her 999th Division I career win, is looking to become the first softball coach and 24th head coach overall in NCAA history to amass 1,000 Division I victories.
