Fresno State's Wright is Grandest of Them All

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball head coach Margie Wright became the first NCAA Division I softball coach and the 24th NCAA Division I head coach overall, regardless of sport, to amass 1,000 NCAA Division I wins last night.
The tenth-ranked Fresno State softball team (20-6) swept Tennessee Tech in a non-conference doubleheader to give Wright career wins No. 999 (4-0) and No. 1,000 (2-1) at home in Bulldog Diamond.
Before a crowd of 1,687, Wright joined an elite group of 1,000-win coaches on the NCAA Division I level as 23 head baseball coaches had posted 1,000 NCAA Division I victories entering the 2002 season.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern (Clovis) picked up the two wins as she tossed a no-hitter in game one and came in relief for a game two victory as she improved to 15-3 on the season.
Wright's accomplishment will be officially celebrated with a pre-game ceremony on April 4 when the Bulldogs host Tulsa in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader, 6:00 p.m., at Bulldog Diamond.
The Bulldogs, who will not be back home until April 4 to begin an eight-game homestand, will participate in the Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif., beginning tomorrow and running through Sunday, March 14-17. The four-day, 16-team field, hosted by CS Fullerton, features nine Top 25 teams.
Fresno State will meet No. 18 Louisiana-Lafayette (1:00 p.m.) and No. 13 Washington (7:00 p.m.) tomorrow. The Bulldogs will close out pool play with Utah (9:00 a.m.) on Friday morning before entering bracket play that evening.
