Equestrian Dominates at Regional Championships

FRESNO, Calif.- - Sixteen Equestrian riders competed in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Regional Championships today at UC Davis. Fresno State had eight riders place in the top two positions at the show. These riders will now represent Fresno State at the Zone Eight Championship on April 6-7 at Nevada where they will face riders from regions 2-4. Top placers at that show will compete at the IHSA National Finals May 3-5 in Cazenovia, N.Y.
Region One is composed of Bakersfield College, Cal Poly, Nevada, Reedley College, Sierra Nevada College, St. Mary's University, Stanford, UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz.
"These are very good placings," said head Coach Megan McGee. "It was a good way to finish the year for our region."
Versatile rider Amy Reed (Grand Rapids, Mich.) garnered two Regional Championships titles. The sophomore was the Regional Champion of the Western Walk-Jog class and of the English Walk-Trot class. She will compete at the Zone Eight Championships for the classes. Fellow Bulldog Nicole Burkett-Mitchell (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) also rode in the Walk-Trot and the senior took third.
Fresno State dominated the Intermediate Stock Seat class. Western riders Katie Wagner (Fullerton, Calif.) and Heather Kaiser (Jerome, Idaho) were the Regional and Reserve champions in the class. They will move to the Zone Championships. Senior Lisa McPeters (Madera, Calif.) and sophomore Maja Jordan (Sanger, Calif.) placed third and fourth in the class. Senior Stephanie Reeves (Menlo Park, Calif.) placed sixth in the class.
Rounding out the western winners is sophomore Christy Webb (Lodi, Calif.). She placed third in the Advanced Stock Seat class.
Bullard High alumna Amanda Smith (Fresno, Calif.) was the Regional Champion in the English Walk-Trot-Canter class. The senior will compete at the Zone Championships. Sophomore Christina Brown (Agoura Hills, Calif.) took third in the event.
San Joaquin Memorial alumna Shannon Morrison (Fresno, Calif.) was the Regional Champion of the Novice Equitation on the Flat class. The sophomore will move to the Zone Championships. Fellow Bulldog sophomore Dana Van Der Giessen (Filer, Calif.) placed fourth in the class.
Katey Feeley (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was the Regional Champion of the Intermediate Equitation Over Fences class. The senior also was the Regional Champion of the Open Equitaion on the Flat class. She will compete at the Zone Championships in both classes. Senior Dawn Crawford (Oak Hills, Calif.) was the Reserve Champion of the Open Equitation on the Flat class.
Two riders round out the English classes. They rode in the in the Intermediate Equitation on the Flat class. Sophomore Dawn McIntosh (Los Gatos, Calif.) and junior Michaela Mathis (Lemoore, Calif.) placed second and third, respectively. McIntosh will compete at the Zone 8 Championships.
