LOS ANGELES - No. 10 Fresno State and No. 1 UCLA played neck-and-neck softball in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at Easton Stadium. However, it was the Bruins who used textbook style of play and got a clutch two-out hit that propelled UCLA to a 1-0 win.
The Bulldogs had one hit and the Bruins had three in a game that featured one extra base hit by Fresno State's starting pitcher Jamie Southern, who had a double hit off the left field center wall.
Southern, who scattered three hits, walked two, struck out two and hit a batter, fell to 19-5 on the year after surrendering a RBI single to center fielder Amanda Freed.
In the bottom of the third, Crissy Buck led off and was hit by pitch after leaning over home plate. Coming in to pinch run for Buck, Erin Rahn advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Monique Mejia and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Natasha Watley. On a 3-2 count, Freed lined a single through the right side to score Rahn.
UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl improved to 15-2 on the season after giving up one hit, one walk and striking out eight to go to 15-2 on the season.
