LOS ANGELES - No. 10 Fresno State looked to threaten No. 1 UCLA right off the bat but the Bruins sealed off any hope as they rumbled to a 7-0 victory in the night cap at Easton Stadium.
The Bulldogs used four pitchers and UCLA's Amanda Freed, the heroine in game one, went the distance as she improved to 15-1 on the year.
Freshman right-hander Amanda Wolf took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings of work to fall to 1-1. Sophomore lefty Lori Hoffman faced on batter and gave up a hit before she was lifted for junior right-hander Leslie Poole. Poole worked 2.2 innings and surrendered nine hits and four runs before freshman right-hander Jamie Southern stopped the hitting barrage with one inning of hitless ball.
Fresno State, which was shutout for the seventh time on the year, tallied five hits and committed two errors while UCLA scored seven runs on 13 hits, which included four extra base hits.
In the first, Fresno State came out quickly as sophomore second baseman Pam Perez led off with a single up the middle and senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple beat out an infield bunt up the first base line. With no outs and runners on first and second, Freed got the next three batters out with two strikeouts and a ground out.
UCLA scored a run in the first, two in the third and fourth innings and tacked on two more in the sixth to improve to 32-3 on the season. The Bruins had three doubles and a home run by catcher Tairia Mims to go to 15-1 at home and 9-2 against the Top 25.
Fresno State, which fell to 28-11, will be back in action next Tuesday, April 2, when they travel to No. 2 Stanford in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
After playing 13 straight road games, Fresno State will return home on April 4 when it hosts Tulsa in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bulldog Diamond.
