FRESNO, Calif. - No. 12 Softball completed a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Cal Poly after Fresno State notched a 2-1 win in the night cap at Bulldog Diamond.
Fresno State used relief pitching and a game-winning hit from the bottom of its line up to go to 34-13 overall and extend its home win streak to 12.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern tossed a three-hitter in five innings, walked none and struck out seven to tally her 23rd win and second on the evening. Southern relieved junior right-hander Leslie Poole, who gave up five hits, one run and walked two in 2.0 innings of work.
Three Bulldogs had multiple-hit performances as senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple (2-3, run), senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti (2-2, walk) and freshman shortstop Leticia Pacheco (2-2) each had two hits a piece.
Pacheco recorded the game-winning hit after lining a shot down the left field line with two out in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Sha Oliver scored the eventual game-winning run as she came in to pinch run for sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman.
Cal Poly attacked early and quickly off of Poole. Putting a run up on the board first, the Mustangs had one hit on eight hits with one error. Cal Poly recorded a RBI single by catcher Carrie Schubert on a two-out single up the middle.
Fresno State answered with the equalizing run via a Mustang error. After Whipple led off with an infield single, Sophomore second baseman Pam Perez sacrificed Whipple to second. Fossatti drew a walk. Southern reached safely on an error by the Mustang shortstop which allowed Whipple to race home.
In the fourth, Hoffman walked before Oliver came in to pinch run. With Cal Poly pitcher Terra Blankenbecler getting junior catcher Pam West to ground out, Pacheco doubled down the left field line on a 1-1 count as Oliver came home.
Fresno State resumes Western Athletic Conference play on Sat., April 13, 1:00 p.m. against San Jose State at Bulldog Diamond.
