OKLAHOMA CITY - No. 12 Fresno State opened play in the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Challenge with a commanding performance.
Playing at the Don E. Porter Hall of Fame stadium, site of the 2002 NCAA Women's College World Series, the Bulldogs recorded a 4-0 victory over ninth-ranked Oklahoma.
Freshman pitcher Jamie Southern and senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti led the way for the 'Dogs as they each went 2-3 and accounted for all three doubles as well as three of the team's four RBI.
Masterful in the circle, Southern limited Oklahoma to four hits, walked none and struck out five as she notched her 17th shutout in 25 wins on the season. At the plate, Southern had a pair of doubles and two RBI.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first with a three-run frame in the top of the third before adding another run in the sixth as they recorded seven hits off All-America southpaw Jennifer Stewart.
In the third, senior first baseman Vanessa Czarnecki was hit by pitch. Senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple sacrificed Czarnecki to second. Sophomore second baseman Pam Perez then reached first base safely on a fielding error by the Sooner second baseman. With runners on the corners and one out, Fossatti doubled to center field to score Whipple. With Perez at third and Fossatti on second, Southern doubled to right field and knocked in Perez and Fossatti.
In the fifth, the Sooners threatened the Bulldogs. Fresno State allowed the first two batters to reach safely on fielding errors. With Oklahoma sacrificing runners to second and third, Southern got a strike out and a fly out to end the inning.
In the sixth, Southern led off with a double to left center. With junior Sha Oliver coming in to pinch run, Stewart struck out sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman before giving up a single to freshman left fielder Julie Selbicky. With Oliver at third and Selbicky at first, the Sooners brought in senior right-hander Angela Wedlake to pitch against senior outfielder Lashme Gomez, who came in to pinch hit for junior catcher Pam West. Gomez delivered a deep fly ball to center and Oliver scored on a sacrifice fly.
Fresno State closes out play at the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Softball Challenge tomorrow night with a 5:30 p.m. (CDT) contest against Oklahoma State.
