TULSA, Okla. - No. 13 Fresno State softball picked up its 15th Western Athletic Conference win after notching a 2-0 victory over Tulsa at the Donna J. Hardesty Softball Complex.
The Bulldogs, who were playing their ninth straight game on the road, scored two runs on seven hits while Tulsa was limited to four hits.
Senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti provided all the offense in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Fossatti blasted the first pitch over the left field fence, approximately 230 feet, for her fifth home run on the year. Sophomore shortstop Pam Perez was on base after being walked.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern recorded her 30th win. Picking up her 19th shutout victory, Southern scattered four hits, walked none and struck out 10. The ten strikeouts gives her 17 ten-strikeout games on the year. Southern struck out seven of the first 10 Golden Hurricane faced.
In WAC play, Southern improved to 9-1 with six shutouts and 97 strikeouts in 94.1 innings for a 0.52 ERA. Overall, Southern needs 60 strikeouts to become just the third freshman in NCAA history to post 400 or more strikeouts in a season.
In addition, Southern's 30-6 overall record is the second-best mark posted by a Bulldog rookie pitcher. Southern will look to tie two records next week when the 'Dogs host UC Santa Barbara in non-conference action.
Terry Carpenter (1989) holds the distinction of posting the most wins (31) and best overall record (31-6) by a rookie Bulldog. In addition, Carpenter holds the record for most shutouts by a freshman (21) and Southern is two tie of tying that mark.
