Baseball Loses Heartbreaker 6-5 Against San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Fresno State (20-17, 8-5) battled San Jose State down to wire but was unable to pull out the victory. The Spartans (27-16, 7-6 WAC) tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth inning on an unearned run and scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a squeeze play with one out.
Junior RHP Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) went nine inning allowing five runs with four being earned while striking out nine. He would get a no-decision, however.
Fresno State was first to get on the board as junior outfielder Joey Myers (Fresno, Calif.) blasted a solo homer in the third inning. It was his third of the season. Senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White (Berkeley, Calif.) dove in sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) on a ground out off SJSU starter RHP Mike Malott.
The Spartans answered in their half of the third highlighted by a two-run double by designated hitter Hector Zamora. SJSU would take the early 3-2 lead.
In fifth inning each team scored a run to up the score to 4-3 in the Spartans' favor. Riday-White doubled in Patrick for FS's third run.
In the sixth inning the Bulldogs took the 5-4 lead when Patrick singled with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Junior second baseman Scott Beshears (Fresno, Calif.) drove in the other run on a fielder's choice.
San Jose State tied the game in the eighth inning on a ground out RBI by catcher Adam Shorsher. The run was unearned due to a Fresno State error in the inning.
Spartan RHP Don Gemmell held FS in check, pitching 4.2 no-hit innings in relief while picking up the win.
SJSU first baseman Jordan Bergstrom bunted in the winning run in the tenth inning off senior RHP Zach Minor (Walnut Creek, Calif.). The run was charged to senior RHP Francisco Nieves (Oakland, Calif.), who started the inning. He would also suffer the his second loss if the season.
Sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee (Santa Cruz, Calif.) extended his hitting streak to 13 games, which is a season-high for an FS player and a career high for McGehee.
Fresno State and San Jose State will continue their series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
