BERKELEY, Calif. - Fresno State (20-20) suffered its fourth loss in a row and eighth straight on the road, falling 9-2 against Cal. Senior RHP Francisco Nieves (Oakland, Calif.) and the Bulldogs kept the game close at 2-1 before falling apart in the later innings.
FS got on the board first scoring a run on single by junior outfielder Brendon Suga (Mililani, Hawaii) that drove in senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White (Berkeley, Calif.) in the second inning. Suga would have the only RBI on the day for the Bulldogs going 1-for-4.
Cal (24-18) answered in its half of the second on a two-run home run by catcher Chris Grossman. He would go on to homer again in the seventh inning and finish the day going 2-for-5 with five RBI and two runs.
Nieves kept the Golden Bears at bay before running into trouble in the sixth inning. After giving up back-to-back singles, FS brought in senior RHP Bob Runyon (Atwater, Calif.), who gave up a two-run homer the Cal first baseman Conor Jackson.
After giving up a single, Runyon was pulled in favor of freshman RHP Sean Ruthven (Alpharetta, Ga.) who did not fair any better allowing two more runs.
Nieves suffered his third loss of the season.
Fresno State will be in action at home this weekend against Nevada starting Friday at 7 p.m.
