FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (23-20, 11-7 WAC) continued to roll at home, winning its 14th consecutive game with a 16-14 victory against Nevada Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs and Wolf Pack (16-22, 4-11 WAC) combined for 30 runs, 33 hits and six errors.
It was the third time Fresno State swept a series from an opponent this season and third straight series it has won at Pete Beiden Field.
FS seemed to be on its way to a comfortable lead scoring a season-high seven runs in the first inning.
The game turned out to be a nail-biter, however, as Nevada took a 14-13 lead in the seventh inning after the Bulldogs had been up as much as 10-5.
"It's fun to be in games like these, but it would have been better to put them away early. We got balls to drop and find the gaps today," said sophomore Casey McGehee.
Sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) had a career day to lead the Bulldogs at the plate. Patrick went 3-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored, which were both career highs. In the fifth inning Patrick blasted his fifth home run of the season.
FS used six pitchers on the afternoon, including freshman RHP Chad Edwards (Gosford, Australia), who made his first appearance of the season in the ninth inning to pick up the save. Edwards had been sidelined all season with a stress fracture in his right foot.
Seven different Bulldogs had an RBI in the game, including senior outfielder Joey Myers (Fresno, Calif.), who went 1-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White (Berkeley, Calif.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. It was the fifth straight game Riday-White has hit safely and first multi-hit game since March 16, against Pacific.
Junior LHP David Bair (Merced, Calif.) picked up his first win of his career, going two scoreless innings while striking two and walking two on three hits.
Senior RHP Zach Minor (Walnut Creek, Calif.), who started the game, went 1.2 innings while giving up five runs with only two being earned.
Junior Scott Beshears (Fresno, Calif.) continued to torch Nevada going 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Beshears batted .500 (6-for-12) in the series.
Nevada was led by infielder Mike Gillies, who went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. The Wolf Pack also got a boost in the fifth inning when Jacob Butler pinch hit a two-run homer to cut FS's lead to 10-8.
Nevada starter RHP James Holcomb lasted just 0.2 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with only two of those runs being earned. LHP Bryan Johnson would suffer the loss, however, pitching the final 2.1 innings while giving up three runs on three hits.
The Bulldogs will be on the road next with a game at UC Irvine on Wednesday and a three-game series at Hawai'i. FS will be looking to snap its seven-game road losing streak.
