Baseball Drops Series Opener Against Hawai'i 6-2

HONOLULU - Fresno State (23-22, 11-8 WAC) dropped its 10th road loss in a row with a 6-2 decision against Hawai'i. The Bulldogs out-hit the Rainbows (15-27, 4-12 WAC) 10-7, but managed to score just two runs, stranding 12 runners and grounding into two double plays.
Junior RHP Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) suffered his fourth loss of the season going 5.1 innings allowing five runs with four being earned on five hits. Fritz failed to go nine innings for the first time since March 29 when he went 5.1 against Rice.
First baseman Gregg Omori sparked Hawai'i in the fifth inning with a two-out bases loaded double that scored three and gave the Rainbows the 5-1 lead.
Rainbow starter RHP Chris George held the Bulldogs in check going eight innings while giving up just one run on nine hits.
Fresno State rallied in the ninth inning loading the bases with two outs. Fritz walked to score a run, bringing up junior first baseman Brian Pierce (Fresno, Calif.), who grounded to third to end the rally and the game.
Fritz led FS at the plate going 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run. The other run for FS came in the fourth when Pierce drove in Fritz with a single.
Sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee (Santa Cruz, Calif.) extended his hitting streak to 21 games, going 2-for-5.
The Bulldogs and Rainbows continue their series tomorrow at 9:35 p.m. Pacific time.
