RENO, Nev. - Junior designated hitter Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) completed the show he started in game one of the doubleheader against Nevada, homering twice in game two. It was the fifth victory in a row for Fresno State (28-24, 15-8 WAC) as they take the doubleheader with an 8-5 win in game two against the Wolf Pack (21-28, 8-15 WAC).
Senior RHP Bob Runyon (Atwater, Calif.) earned his ninth win of the season going 8.1 innings while allowing five runs on nine hits. It was the third straight outing that Runyon struck out at least ten batters with 11 against Nevada Saturday afternoon. It marked fourth time this season Runyon struck out double-digit batters.
Fritz continued his dominance over Nevada, however, combining for 4-for-9 with five RBI and three runs scored including two doubles and two home runs. It was the third time this season, Fritz has driven in four runs in a game and first time he's hit two home runs in a game. Last season Fritz hit two home runs against TCU in a game, May 4.
The Bulldogs built a 7-2 lead going into the eighth inning on two-run homers by Fritz in the third and fifth innings. FS manufactured a run in the fourth inning on a squeeze play by junior outfielder Joey Myers (Fresno, Calif.) that brought in senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White (Berkeley, Calif.), who had reached base on an error.
In the seventh inning the Bulldogs added two more on a two-run single by sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) that drove in freshman Carl Lipsey (Fresno, Calif.) and junior Scott Beshears (Fresno, Calif.).
Nevada rallied in the late innings, scoring two and one runs in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Freshman RHP Chad Edwards (Gosford, Australia) came in once again and pitched the final 0.2 innings. Edwards allowed a run-scoring single in his appearance, but the run was charged to Runyon.
Catcher Tony Cappuccilli and outfielder Chris Gimenez, who combined for 4-for-8 with four RBI and two runs scored, including a solo home run each, led Nevada in game two.
Sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee (Santa Cruz, Calif.) extended his hitting streak to 28 games, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Fresno State will go for the second sweep of the season against Nevada tomorrow at 1 p.m.
