HONOLULU - Fresno State (24-22, 12-8 WAC) received a solid pitching performance from senior RHP Bob Runyon (Atwater, Calif.), who went the distance allowing just four runs with three being earned on 11 hits while striking out 10 Rainbow (15-28, 4-13 WAC) batters.
It was the first back-to-back wins for Runyon since beating Pacific and Louisiana Tech in consecutive decisions March 16 and 23. Runyon improves to 7-7 this season with seven complete games, which ties junior RHP Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) for most on the team.
The last time the Bulldogs won a road game was March 24 against Louisiana Tech.
"We approach all our games the same way. Balls hit today were going our way and it feels good to break the road losing streak," said Runyon.
The Bulldogs were led at the plate by junior second baseman Scott Beshears (Fresno, Calif.) who went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs, capped off with his second home run of the season in the seventh inning.
Senior Brad Harper (Madera, Calif.) got FS on the board in the second inning with his second triple of the season that brought home junior first baseman Brian Pierce (Fresno, Calif.).
Sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Patrick was responsible for both FS runs in the third inning with an RBI single that brought in Beshears and scored the second run on a balk by UH starter RHP Sean Yamashita.
Hawai'i scored in the second inning on a two-run single by designated hitter Brent Cook. Runyon would go on to settle down and blank the the Rainbows the next five innings, giving up an unearned run in the eighth inning and a sacrifice fly run in the ninth.
Sophomore third basemen Casey McGehee (Santa Cruz, Calif.) extended his consecutive game hitting-streak to 22 with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
The Bulldogs look to take the series finale tomorrow at 10:05 a.m. Pacific time.
