FRESNO, Calif. - New Fresno State head women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson has signed Chanie Sutherland of Midland (Texas) College to a national letter of intent to play for the Bulldogs next season. Sutherland, who will be a junior next year, is Johnson's first signee since being named coach April 5.
A native of Odessa, Texas, Sutherland, a 5-foot 8-inch guard, helped lead the Lady Chaparral's to a 26-6 record last year and a second place finish in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. She played in 29 of 32 games and averaged 7.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, numbers which made her honorable mention all-conference.
In Sutherland's two years at Midland College, the Lady Chaps compiled a 61-8 record, including a 35-2 mark her freshman year, in which they were national runner-up. In her career, Sutherland averaged 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest.
"Chanie Sutherland exemplifies exactly what we are looking for in a player," Johnson said. "She is a fabulous person, a tremendous student and an outstanding basketball player. She is going to help us make this program the winner we know it can be."
Sutherland was a standout at Odessa High School, earning All-District 4-5A honors four times. She was also a four-time All-Permian Basin selection, was named to five all-tournament teams and was a member of the Academic All-State Basketball Team. Sutherland averaged 15 points, three rebounds and four assists her senior season at OHS.
