FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball placed six Bulldogs on the 2002 All-Western Athletic Conference teams, as announced by the conference office this afternoon.
Senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti (Tustin) and freshman right-hander Jamie Southern (Clovis) were selected first team. Junior catcher Pam West (Corona), freshman shortstop Leticia Pacheco (Bloomington), senior outfielder Tiffany Whipple (Fresno) and senior utility player Vanessa Czarnecki (Riverside) were named second team.
Southern continues to make history as a rookie by becoming the first conference player in league and Fresno State history to be named WAC Pitcher of the Year and WAC Freshman of the Year in the same season.
In WAC action, Southern led the league in wins (11-3), win/loss (11-3), strikeouts (137), innings pitched (125.2) and ERA (0.45). Southern set the WAC's single-game record in strikeouts (22) and innings pitched (18) while establishing a new league single-season strikeout mark.
Fossatti is just the third Bulldog in the program's history to be a four-time first team all-conference selection as she joins Terry Carpenter (pitcher)and Gena Strang (first base)on the elite list.
Whipple picked up her second consecutive WAC honor after being a second team selection in 2000 while West, Pacheco and Czarnecki are first-time honorees.
Southern is the fifth Bulldog overall and fourth Bulldog pitcher to be named WAC Freshman of the Year. Fresno State has had the league's freshman of the year pick five times in the last seven years (Lindsay Parker, P, 1996; Amanda Scott, P, 1997; Becky Witt, OF, 1998; and Kristen Hunter, P, 1999)
Under 17th-year head coach Margie Wright, she has had 49 different players garner all-conference honors 103 times. In addition, she has had seven conference pitcher of the year picks and all five WAC Freshman of the Year honorees.
