FRESNO, Calif. - For the second game in a row, Cal pitcher Jocelyn Forest was dominating, this time striking out seven while hurling a complete-game four-hitter in the Golden Bears' 1-0 victory over Stanford in a winners bracket game in the NCAA Region IV Championships.
California scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a single, a walk and a double pushed the runners around the bases. Cal third baseman Candice Harper got on base with a single, before its first baseman, Veronica Nelson, was walked. With two on catcher Courtney Scott hit a double to deep center to score Harper.
Stanford made a good effort in the seventh to score. Jessica Allister, the catcher, hit a double with one out to get things rolling. Unfortunately the next two batters were not as successful, as they lined to third and struck out swinging.
California moves to 2-0 in the tournament and will play tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. The Golden Bears will play the winner of Game 6 between Fresno State and Cal State Fullerton. Stanford will get a bye and will play Saturday at 5 p.m. if Cal State Fullerton wins Game 6. Should CS Fullerton lose, the Titans will play the Cardinal at noon.
Jocelyn Forest (23-12) earned the victory after she allowed four hits, struck out seven and tallied zero walks. Tori Nyberg (26-10) allowed three hits, one run and struck out two with two walks.
