FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head football coach Pat Hill announced today that nose tackle Del Hawkins and wide receiver Adam Jennings have won this spring's "Bad 'Dog" Awards.
The award is presented to the football player whose effort goes above and beyond the normal call of duty. In order to receive the "Bad 'Dog" Award, a player must attend every meeting, practice and weight session in addition to giving 100 percent in each.
"The winners of this award display what Bulldog football is all about, and that's just what Del and Adam did this spring," Hill said. "Both are excellent young men who really opened a lot of eyes with their work ethic. This is an award that is earned only through very hard work, and both of these men worked very hard during the spring."
Hawkins, a junior from Tracy, Calif., played in all 14 games last year as a backup nose tackle. He also played a vital role on Fresno State's kickoff team and saw his most significant playing time when Jason Stewart went down for a four-game stretch after suffering a concussion during the Colorado State game. Hawkins finished the year with 18 tackles, including two for loss and one sack.
A redshirt freshman from Granite Bay, Calif., Jennings emerged this spring and will provide the Bulldogs with depth at wide receiver. Entering fall camp, Jennings will serve as a backup to senior Marque Davis at the receiver position.
Hill also announced that Hawkins as well as tight ends Duncan Reid and Stephen Spach will receive scholarships for the 2002 season.
Fresno State kicks off next year with the John Thompson Foundation Classic at Wisconsin on Aug. 23 on ESPN. The home opener is Aug. 29 against San Diego State on ESPN2.
