FRESNO, Calif. - Head women's tennis coach Kevin Epley has announced the signing of four players to national letters of intent to play for the Bulldogs beginning in the 2002-03 season. Those players are Ofra Friedman, Tsi Tsi Masvaba, Vlatka Jovanovic and Katherin Winterhalter.
"This recruiting class is one that will come in and immediately make an impact on this team," Epley said. "They have very strong work ethics and fit right into our philosophy. All four want to work hard on the court to be the best tennis players they can be and are committed to becoming quality student-athletes."
Friedman, a native of Rishon LeZion, Israel, is currently her country's No. 2 ranked player. After having spent two years in the Israeli army, she is now able to devote herself again to tennis.
A native of Zimbabwe, Masvaba is currently ranked No. 80 in the junior world rankings.
Jovanovic, currently ranked No. 80 in her native Germany, has victories over Women's Tennis Association players ranked in the top 300 in the world. Originally from Croatia, she moved to Munich with her family as a refugee six years ago.
Winterhalter is a talented young German exchange student who graduated from Buchanon High School in Clovis, Calif. She has defeated current Bulldog Ewa Grusiecka and was defeated by Kim Niggemeyer in three close sets in the Fresno City Championships last fall.
