FRESNO, Calif. - No. 14 Fresno State softball used a three-hitter from Jamie Southern, had key hits from the bottom of its line up and capitalized on errors in the Bulldogs' 5-0 victory over Portland State at Bulldog Diamond.
Southern, who struck out nine and walked one, notched her 20th shutout victory while recording her 31st win on the season. She also tied the school's rookie record for most wins which was established in 1989 when Terry Carpenter went 31-6.
Pushing her strikeout total to 361 in 310.2 innings, Southern also improved to 10-2 in WAC play to become just one of a handful of conference pitchers to post 10 wins in league history as a rookie.
The Bulldogs put four runs on the board in the second before adding another in the sixth as they collected six hits and comitted an error.
In the second, sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman legged out a three-base error as Viking catcher Rose Rutledge rocketed a shot over the first baseman's head. With Mitzi Ing coming in to pinch run for Hoffman, pitcher Morgan Seibert induced freshman left fielder Julie Selbicy into a pop out. Freshman shortstop Leticia Pacheco walked before junior catcher Pam West knocked in Ing with a RBI single to left field. Senior first baseman Vanessa Czarnecki then reached on sacrifice and went to second after Seibert threw the ball away trying to get lead runner Pacheco who scored on the mishap. With Sha Oliver coming in to pinch run for West, who is at third, and Czarnecki at second, senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple reached safely on a fielder's choice and advanced to second as both Oliver and Czarnecki scored on a throwing error by Viking second baseman Megumi Hackett.
In the sixth, Selbicky led off with a single to left field. Kristyn Kellogg came in to pinch run and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pacheco and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Czarnecki singled to center field to score Kellogg.
West led the 'Dogs after going 2-3 with a RBI while Czarnecki had the team's other RBI after going 1-1 with a run.
