Three Bulldogs Named to USA Softball National/Elite Teams

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball had three Bulldogs named to the USA Softball National/Elite Teams with pitcher Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) and two former players in outfielder Laura Berg (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) and infielder Nina Lindenberg (Anaheim Hills, Calif.).
Southern, who just completed her freshman season at Fresno State, was selected to the USA Softball Elite team. Southern is part of a 17-player squad that will help prepare the USA National Team for international events by competing in scrimmages and exhibition games against them prior to these events. The USA Softball Elite team also will compete at the Canada Cup in Surrey, B.C., Canada, July 12-21.
Berg, a two-time U.S. Olympic Softball Gold Medalist, has been a part of the USA Softball National Team since 1994 when she won a gold medal for the USA National Team at the VIII ISF Women's World Championship in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.
Lindenberg, a member of Fresno State's 1998 National Championship team, has been a part of the USA Softball National Team since 1995 when she won a gold medal at the V ISF Junior Women's World Championship in Normal, Illinois.
The USA Softball National Team, which is comprised of 17 players, will be vying for an unprecedented fifth consecutive title at the ISF Women's World Championship in Canada, July 26-August 4.
The 2002 ISF Women's World Championship serves as the major qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The top five teams from the World Championship will qualify for Athens and will be seeded in order of finish.
The USA Softball National and Elite Teams were picked from participants at the Women's World Championship Tryout Camp, which concluded this past Sunday in Chula Vista, Calif.
