Equestrian Wins Western Title at Home Opener

FRESNO - The Fresno State equestrian team took first place in the western competition at its home opener today at the Student Horse Center. The Bulldogs garnered 34 team points and six first place finishes to secure the high point team honor. Fresno State finished in third in the English competition with 20 points behind U.C. Davis (30) and Cal Poly-SLO (23).
"The western riders really wanted to prove themselves today," first-year head coach Chuck Smallwood said. "They were on a mission."
The six Bulldogs who won their classes in the western competition were senior Jessica Frazier (Open Rail), sophomore Kristin Marchesi (Advanced Rail), senior Amy Reed (Novice Rail), freshman Tiffany Washington (Intermediate 2-A), senior Abby Kirchert (Intermediate 2-B) and freshman Taylor Mason (Reining). In the English competition, freshman Elise Kolp (Intermediate Flat), freshman Megan Hoefflinger (Novice Flat-A), junior Angela Klug (Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter) and Kirchert (Beginning Walk-Trot-Canter) placed first in their respective classes.
Smallwood credited today's victory to his coaching staff made up of assistants Dana Harris and Trista Armstrong. "Both coaches have been working diligently with the western team and it showed in today's competition," said Smallwood.
The Bulldog equestrian team returns to action on the road January 19 when the Bulldogs visit Stanford. Fresno State will host its next show February 21-22 at the Student Horse Center.
