FRESNO, Calif. - There is plenty riding for Fresno State in its final regular season game. The Bulldogs need a win to keep bowl hopes alive. The Miners enter the week with a six-game losing streak but are returning home after two tough games on the the road, at Boise State and Rice. UTEP last week lost to the Owls 45-14 in Houston. The Bulldogs enter the week looking for their eighth win of the season after losing to Boise State 31-17, which snapped a four-game winning streak.
Fresno State leads the all-time series 7-2-1 but have not won in El Paso since 1992. The two teams have not met since 2000, a 23-13 Miners victory at the Sun Bowl, in a game that catapulted UTEP to a WAC championship and berth in the Humanitarian Bowl. Fresno State is 1-1-1 at the Sun Bowl.
Fresno State will need some help to gain a program record fifth consecutive bowl appearance. Not only will Fresno State need a win over UTEP, other things must happen in order for Fresno State to be considered for a repeat appearance in the Silicon Valley Football Classic. Among those scenarios, Nevada must win at Boise State this week and Boise State must win at Hawaii on Dec. 6. That would create a tie situation between two bowl eligible teams (Tulsa and Fresno State) that could not be broken per the WAC tie breaking procedure. Since three WAC teams are guaranteed bowl berths, one of the four bowl eligible WAC teams will be shutout unless a bowl game at-large opening would select a WAC school.
