FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball head coach Margie Wright announced the signing of three student-athletes to wear the Bulldog Red and Blue for the 2004-05 academic school year. Inking a trio of players who sport versatility in both the infield and outfield, Jenna Cervantez (Clovis, Calif.), Mallory Perkins (Clovis, Calif.) and Shauna Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) are the newest 'Dogs.
Cervantez, out of Clovis High School, is a right-handed batter who has played second base and the outfield. Joining fellow Cougar alumnae Jamie Southern and Nichole Willis in 2005, Cervantez finished as one of the top four batters for CHS last season.
Batting .364 (44-121) with 30 runs, 11 doubles, a triple and 15 RBI as a junior, Cervantez has been a three-time all-Tri-City Athletic Conference selection. As a sophomore she garnered second team all-West Region honor while leading the Cougars in batting (.365), hits (50), runs (34), on base percentage (.477), stolen bases (14) and assists (92).
Perkins, who is out of Buchanan High School, is a left-handed batter who can run and slap. Playing mainly the outfield for the Bears, she was an all-state selection as well as all-Valley, all-city and all-TRAC as a junior. While setting the school record for hits in a season (54) in 2003, Perkins helped BHS to a league championship as a freshman.
Johnson, out of LA Baptist Jr/Sr High School, is a left-handed power hitter. Able to play first base, outfield as well as pitch, she led her prep team in virtually every offensive category while hitting better than .600 as a junior. The 2003 All-CIF selection has been a three-year varsity starter. In addition, Johnson is one of two original Southern California Stealth members as she has played travel ball for them the last six years.
"I'm excited about our new class," said Fresno State softball head coach Margie Wright, who is the NCAA's all-time winningest softball coach. "Versatility, speed, physical strength and consistency sums up this class very well. They are great additions to the program and each one will find her niche and succeed."
