Fresno - Fresno State head coach Pat Hill handed out the awards for the 2003 football season at the annual football awards banquet held at the New Exhibit Hall in downtown Fresno today. Senior receiver Bernard Berrian was selected the team's Most Valuable Player in voting by the Bulldog players. Nearly 700 fans attended the function.
Berrian, a first-team All-American in 2001, has overcome injuries to become one of the most prolific and exciting players in Fresno State history. Berrian set school records for touchdown receptions (25) and all-purpose yardage in his career (5,778). With three receptions in the Silicon Valley Football Classic, he would become just the second player in school history with 200 career receptions. He has been selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game.
Hill credited the senior class of 13 players for their four straight bowl appearances and for producing a 35-18 overall record, including a 20-3 record in Bulldog Stadium over the last four years.
"This team deserves a lot of credit," said Hill. "To win eight games and get a bowl against the toughest schedule in school history is a great accomplishment. They overcame adversity all season and deserve a lot of credit for hanging together."
