Back in my home state of Oklahoma, whenever it snows, people try to stay home! In fact, my school used to have "snow days" which meant that school would be cancelled due to too much snow. The team and I learned that in Pullman, Washington, "snow days" are completely normal. Students were walking all over Washington State's campus with snow falling on them and they were not phased one bit. But for us, it was a whole new experience!
Seeing several inches of snow on the ground and even more still falling was quite a surprise to us when we walked out of Thursday night's practice. Chantea Fleming, Mindy Clark and Faith Probst all had never even been outside in snow before. Mindy said, "It looks like what I saw in the movies." Coach Wiggins and Drew, our manager, started singing Christmas songs. Chanie Sutherland laid down in it and made a snow angel! I was trying to put on Chapstik until I dropped it, and sadly my Chapstik got buried in snow flurries. Coach K ( Stacy Johnson-Klein) was bolting to the bus with her lil' newborn, trying to keep him all bundled up. Once we got in the bus, the craziness didn't stop!
Our bus driver, Mr. Wayne, was driving us to a Mexican food restaurant so we could get some dinner. Maybe the snow was blocking Mr. Wayne's vision because the next thing we knew, we saw a cop approaching the door of the bus. Apparently, Mr. Wayne had side-swiped a parked car, knocking off a side mirror!
Another crazy thing about Pullman was dead bugs!! While we were eating lunch Thursday, Paige Diggs almost swallowed a dead bug in her water. So she told the waitress, who then took her cup away and brought back another glass. A minute later, Paige found another dead bug in her drink! Then Coach K got up to perform a bug check on all of our waters! The dead bugs didn't stop there. At the gym, we noticed dead flies all over the court! They were even dying during practice! While I was stretching, I watched a fly fall from the sky, roll around in a couple circles, then just flop over, breathing its last breath. Something wasn't right with those flies! We found dead flies stuck to the bottom of our shoes for the rest of the weekend.
The "Pullmanites" probably thought we were kind of crazy too! Right after the Mexican food dinner, we made a trip to Dairy Queen for ice cream. Ice cream in freezing cold snow weather just doesn't make too much sense, but hey it was worth it. My banana split with cookie dough was mmm...mmm...good!
