FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State looks to right the ship Wednesday against long-time rival Pacific. The Bulldogs currently stand at 1-3 on the year, the first time since the 1988-89 season they have lost three of their first four. Things are different for the Tigers, who are 3-2 and come in off a victory over WAC preseason favorite Nevada. Tonight's contest is the final road non-conference game of the year for Fresno State.
The Bulldogs-Tigers series has spanned 146 games, making it the longest running rivalry in Fresno State's history. Pacific leads 75-61, although the Bulldogs have won the last four in a row, including last year's 80-60 victory at Selland Arena. Fresno State began playing the Tigers in 1923, the third year the Bulldogs had a men's basketball program. Since, the two teams have played every year with the exception of 1934, '44, '59 and '64. Both were members of the same conference for several years before Fresno State moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1992. Of the 146 meetings, only one has come in the postseason, that being a 73-70 victory by the Bulldogs in the 1998 National Invitation Tournament. Pacific leads the all-time series in Stockton 45-23, although Fresno State has won the last three games played at the Spanos Center.
