FRESNO, Calif. - Jeff Weaver and Denis Springer pitched a combined five shutout innings to lead the alumni to a 7-4 win over Fresno State Saturday in the 24th annual alumni game at Beiden Field. The victory was the alumni's fifth in the last six years.
Fresno State still leads the overall series 19-5.
Weaver started the game for the alumni and limited Fresno State to a walk and a hit over two innings. Springer relieved Weaver and tossed three innings of three-hit ball while striking out one to earn the victory.
The alumni broke a scoreless tie in the second inning when Brandon Gemoll scored on a throwing error by junior infielder Ryan Haag. In the sixth, the alumni tacked on three runs courtesy of an RBI single by Jason Wood, an RBI groundout by Randy Asador and an error by Haag that allowed Toby Riday-White to score.
Fresno State recorded its first run of the game in the sixth inning on a home run by junior infielder Brian Pierce. The Bulldogs added single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Senior outfielder Joey Myers led the Bulldogs with two hits.
FS freshman right-hander Mike Schilling picked up loss but pitched three innings of one-hit baseball while surrendering an unearned run.
The Bulldogs open the regular season Tuesday when they travel to face UC Irvine at 6 p.m.
