Baseball Outlasts San Francisco, 6-5

FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Aaron Kempster snapped a 5-5 tie with a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh inning as Fresno State defeated San Francisco 6-5 Saturday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs improved to 3-7 while the Dons fell to 4-7.
Junior outfielder Tory Davis was hit by a pitch by USF's Kevin Annis (0-1) to lead off the seventh. Davis hit his first homer of the year in the third inning with a three-run blast to center field. Senior outfielder Scott Beshears pinch ran for Davis and advanced to second on a ground out by junior Cody Smith setting the stage for Kempster.
Fresno State junior left-hander David Griffin (1-0) tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn his first career victory in his first career appearance. Griffin recorded Bulldog season bests with six strikeouts and retired nine straight at one point while fanning six in a row. Griffin, starter Josh Glynn and Bryan Wolfenbarger combined to tally a season high 12 strikeouts. Wolfenbarger pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his first career save.
Nick Cirbo and Nick Tarbat each clubbed solo home runs for the Dons.
The Bulldogs wrap up the series with the Dons Sunday at 1 p.m. USF right-hander Tony Biale (1-1, 7.00) and Fresno State righty Cody Smith (0-1, 3.29) are scheduled to start.
