MALIBU, Calif. - Freshman designated hitter Michael Beattie hit a game-winning solo home run in the ninth inning as Pepperdine hung on for a 4-3 victory over Fresno State Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves improved to 6-4 while the Bulldogs fell to 4-9.
Beattie's round tripper came with one out off Fresno State junior right-hander Bryan Wolfenbarger (1-1) who pitched five innings in relief. Wolfenbarger (eight) and starter Matt Garza (five) combined to strikeout a Bulldog season high 13 while both establishing career highs.
Trailing 3-1 in the ninth inning, Fresno State rallied with a pair of two-out RBI singles by senior Scott Beshears and junior Ryan Haag off Pepperdine's Kea Kometani (1-0). Junior infielder Chris Patrick led off the inning with a walk. After junior outfielder Tory Davis struck out, junior outfielder Cody Smith singled to left, advancing Patrick to second. Sophomore infielder Aaron Kempster then struck out setting the stage for Beshears and Haag. Smith (2-4), Beshears (2-4), and Haag (2-3) each tallied a pair of hits to lead the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs wrap up the three-game series against the Waves Sunday at 1 p.m. Fresno State right-hander Cody Smith (1-1, 4.34) is scheduled to oppose Pepperdine righty Jacob Barrack (0-1, 7.00)
