In addition to closing out the month of March at home, the Bulldogs will open April with six straight contests at Bulldog Diamond, including their conference opener against Hawai'i on April 4-5. What's In a Number
Head coach Margie Wright is 10 wins shy of picking up her 900th school victory. In addition, Wright is three games shy of coaching her 1,400th game. The NFCA Hall of Famer and the NCAA's all-time winningest softball coach is 438-82 (.842) at Bulldog Diamond.
Young Team Rebounds Despite Tough Losses
Of the 14 losses endured this season, eight have come by one run and nine have happened by two runs or less. Of the eight one-run losses, four have happened in extra innings -- all courtesy of the international tie-breaker rule. Of the eight Top 25 games played, Fresno State is 1-7 with four of the seven losses coming by a run. The Bulldogs recorded their first Top 25 win last week when they defeated No. 3 Nebraska, 7-3, at the Kia Klassic. Fresno State, which opened the season at 0-4, is 4-2 in its last six. Despite the bumps in the road, the 'Dogs have played one of the toughest preseason schedules in the country as seven underclassmen are in starting position roles.
Head Coach Margie Wright
As the NCAA's all-time winningest coach in Division I softball, head coach Margie Wright (Illinois State, 1974) is in her 18th season at the helm of the Fresno State softball program. Wright, who became the first Division I softball coach and 24th Division I head coach overall to record 1,000 Division I victories last year, is 10 wins shy of tallying her 900th school victory with an 18-year school mark of 890-277-1 (.763). The 1998 NCAA National Coach of the Year boasts a 24-year career record of 1,037-357-3 (.743). With 10 NCAA Women's College World Series trips under her belt, the eight-time conference coach of the year has collected 13 outright or shared conference titles, a Western Athletic Conference tournament championship, 10 regional championship crowns and 17 straight NCAA postseason appearances at Fresno State. Wright is the only coach in the program's history to garner region coach of the year honors (seven times) and is the third head coach overall at Fresno State to garner National Coach of the Year accolades. Owning a 438-82 (.842) all-time mark at Bulldog Diamond, Wright has recorded 13 50-win campaigns and has averaged 52 wins a season while coaching 45 All-Americans, 13 Verizon Academic All-Americans, four NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners and one NCAA Top VIII awardee. In the postseason, Wright is 59-30 with a NCAA title, three national runner-up finishes, three third-place showings and three fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Women's College World Series. Having served on the national level as a USA assistant head coach that won gold in the 1996 Olympic Games and at the ISF World Championships as well as a head coach for the USA Junior Women's National Team that won gold in 1995, Wright has made Fresno State one of just three programs in Division I softball to make eight or more trips to the Women's College World Series.

Pitcher's Best Friend
Senior catcher Pam West (Corona, Calif.) has been one of the best kept secrets around the nation at the catching position since first arriving at Fresno State. Leading the nation in runners thrown out as a sophomore, West owns a career .993 fielding percentage in 1,467 career total chances. In the last three years, she has thrown out 49 would-be basestealers for a 61% accuracy (31-80) while, in her career, she has thrown out 61 and owns a 51% accuracy (59-120).
Southern Cooking
At the plate, sophomore pitcher/utility player Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) had an outstanding home and tournament showing at the Kia Klassic last week. In the home doubleheader sweep over Southern Utah, Southern batted .333 (2-6) with two runs, a double, a walk, a RBI and three total bases for a .500 slugging percentage. In the first game, she pitched her second shutout on the year in the 7-0 victory while played first base in the night cap and committed her first error on the year. At the Kia Klassic, Southern batted .385 (5-13) and hit four home runs with eight RBI while totaling 17 total bases for a 1.308 slugging percentage. Hitting four home runs in a span of two days, she slugged a pair of solo shots against No. 13 DePaul (the last time a Bulldog hit a pair of home runs in a game was Nina Lindenberg, who did it four times in 1997) before hitting a three-run home run against No. 3 Nebraska and a two-run home run against Hawai'i. Only going hitless versus Notre Dame, Southern sparked the Bulldogs to a 7-3 victory over third-ranked Nebraska as the 'Dogs clinched second place in pool play and advanced into championship bracket play. Fresno State met Hawai'i in the first round of championship play and Southern took the ball long again after hitting a two-run shot. The Bulldogs then advanced to the quarterfinals of the Kia Klassic and were scheduled to meet No. 6 Oklahoma but the tournament was rained out the final two days. Turning it up, Southern came into the week hitting .280 (14-50) with three runs, a double and a RBI. In the last six games alone she multiplied her RBI tenfold and is hitting a season-high .304 (21-69) with 10 RBI, two doubles and four home runs. Southern has hit safely in six of her last nine and is batting .407 (11-27) with four multiple-hit games. Poole made three appearances, two of them in relief, and made her first start of the season against No. 3 Nebraska. Against Southern Utah, she pitched four-hit ball and struck out four while yielding one run (earned) in 6.1 innings of relief work for Laura Ferreira as she went to 1-0 at home and 1-2 overall. Recording her first win of the season against SUU, she struck out a season-high four Thunderbirds.
