Baseball Outlasts Minnesota, 4-2

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior outfielder Tory Davis belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning that proved to be the difference as Fresno State defeated Minnesota 4-2 Saturday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs won their season high ninth game in a row and improved to 14-12 on the season while the Golden Gophers lost their fifth straight to fall to 9-10.
Davis went 2-for -3 with two RBI including his team leading fourth round tripper of the season to pace the Bulldogs.
Fresno State senior lefthander Donnie Bair (2-0) tossed five shutout innings for his second straight start to earn his second victory of the year. Bair limited the Golden Gophers to two hits and three walks while striking out one.
Fresno State snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Scott Beshears. In the fifth, junior infielder Chris Patrick plated junior Cody Smith with a sacrifice fly of his own. With two outs and junior infielder Ryan Haag at second, Davis homered to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead off Minnesota starter Matt Loberg. Loberg (2-1) allowed four runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings to pick up his first loss of the year.
Luke Appert cut the lead in half with a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Bulldog freshman righty Matt Garza.
Junior righthander Bryan Wolfenbarger pitched a perfect ninth to record his team high fourth save of the year. The Brentwood, Calif., native has not allowed a run in his last seven outings (nine innings).
Fresno State junior infielder Casey McGehee tallied his team leading eleventh multi-hit game of the year going 2-for-4 with two singles.
The Bulldogs and Golden Gophers wrap up the three game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Fresno State will attempt to record its first three game sweep of the season.
