FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team recorded its third straight shutout victory and eighth consecutive win after the Bulldogs punched a 6-0 week off with a 3-0 blanking of San Diego State in the night cap.
The 'Dogs scored three runs on nine hits as sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco hit two runs in for Fresno State with a RBI triple after scoring herself and going 2-3 at the plate.
Senior right-hander Leslie Poole continues to provide the one-two punch in the circle with Jamie Southern. Scattering eight hits, Poole walked none and struck out one as she improved to 4-2 overall. In her last six appearances, she is 4-0 with a win in relief and a no decision in four starts.
The Bulldogs scored all of their needed runs in the second. With one out, freshman designated player Elizabeth Pierce singled to left field. After senior catcher Pam West fouled out to the Aztec catcher, junior centerfielder Mitzi Ing roped a shot into center field. On the first pitch Pacheco tripled to left center as Pierce and Ing scored. Freshman shortstop Christina Clark then singled to left center to knock in Pacheco.
San Diego State (21-14) threatened in the third. The Aztecs loaded the bases on two outs but Poole got SDSU third baseman Kelcy Murphy to ground out to Clark to end the inning. Picking up her second shutout victory, Poole set down 12 of the final 15 Aztec batters in the final four frames.
Fresno State (15-14) will be back in action on Wed., March 26, when the Bulldogs host No. 12 Stanford at 6:00 p.m.
