FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and made it good for a final score when the Bulldogs defeated No. 12 Stanford in game one of the non-conference doubleheader.
Billed as a pitcher's dual, Fresno State's Jamie Southern and Stanford's Dana Sorensen delivered as they combined for 19 strikeouts.
However, Southern won the battle in the circle this evening as she faced one batter over the minimum. Giving up a hit to the leadoff batter in the first, Southern shut the door on the next 21 batters while striking out 11 Cardinal.
Southern, who improved to 10-8 overall, picked up her fifth shutout win of the season (28th of career) and sixth career one-hitter. She also tallied her tenth 10-strikeout game of the season and 29th of her Bulldog career.
Fresno State scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first with no outs. Freshman shortstop Christina Clark singled up the middle before Sorensen issued a walk to freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz. Sorensen advanced the two Bulldog runners after a balk as junior right fielder Lori Hoffman stood at the plate. Hoffman then laced a single down the left field line to score both Clark and Diaz.
Sorensen, who tossed a four-hitter, walked on and struck out eight as she fell to 10-3 on the year. Centerfielder Catalina Morris, the leadoff batter, was the only Cardinal to get a hit.
Clark went 2-3 with a run while Hoffman went 1-2 with two RBI. Junior centerfielder Mitzi Ing was the other Bulldog to record a hit after going 1-2.
