RUSTON, La. - The Fresno State softball team tied its season high in runs and swept the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader from Louisiana Tech with a 10-1 road victory in the night cap.
The Bulldogs improved to 23-18 overall and 4-2 in the WAC while Louisiana Tech is 12-29 and 2-2 in the WAC.
Fresno State scored four runs in the second, had two in the fourth, added one in the sixth and totaled three more in the seventh as it scored 10 runs on 13 hits.
Five Bulldogs had at least two hits as freshman shortstop Christina Clark led the way after going 3-5 with two runs, double, home run and three RBI.
Sophomore right fielder Jamie Southern (2-4, run, 2 RBI), senior catcher Pam West (2-4, RBI), sophomore second baseman Leticia Pacheco (2-4, 3 runs, double, RBI) and freshman left fielder Nicole Shan (2-3, run, double, 2 RBI) all had multiple-hit games.
Senior right-hander Leslie Poole recorded the win and improved to 6-4 overall after giving up one run (earned) on 10 hits while walking one and striking out three.
Louisiana Tech hurler Kristin Rupp gave up 10 runs (five earned) on 13 hits while walking one as she fell to 4-14 overall.
In the second inning for Fresno State, the Bulldogs scored four runs on three hits along with three La Tech errors. Pacheco and Shan each had a one out RBI double to left center while two Bulldogs scored on errors.
In the top of the fourth, Fresno State scored two runs on three hits. Pacheco led off with a single up the middle. Shan sacrificed her to second. Clark then singled to left field as Pacheco went to third. After Diaz grounded out, junior designated player Lori Hoffman walked to load the bases. Southern then lined a single to left field to score Pacheco and Clark.
In the bottom of the fourth, Louisiana Tech got its one run with one out. After Poole allowed back-to-back singles to start the fourth, La Tech bunted its runners into scoring position. Freshman third baseman Angelina Diaz caught a foul pop up just to the left of the third base bag but momentum carried Diaz into the Lady Techster dugout, which allowed both runners to take a base, including the only run that scored for Louisiana Tech.
In the sixth, Clark drilled her second home run on the day and 12th of the season with a solo shot to left field.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs scored three runs on three hits as La Tech committed an error. Junior center fielder Mitzi Ing reached safely on a fielding error by the La Tech shortstop. West singled up the middle as Ing advanced to second. Pacheco reached on a fielder's choice but forced out West as Ing went to third. Shan roped a single to right field to score Ing. With Clark at the plate, Pacheco and Shan both advanced a base on a wild pitch to put them in scoring position. Clark responded with a bases clearing double to left center as Pacheco and Shan scored.
Fresno State will wrap up its six-game road trip this weekend when it travels to Tulsa on Sat., April 12, 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
