FRESNO, Calif. - Outfielder Jacob Butler hit for the cycle to highlight a 20-hit effort by Nevada as the Wolf Pack defeated Fresno State 21-5 Saturday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs lost their fifth in a row and fell to 21-22 overall and 7-10 in the WAC. The loss was also their seventh straight in conference play. The Wolf Pack improved to 23-18 overall and 12-4 in the WAC.
Butler tripled in the third, doubled in the fifth, homered in the sixth and singled in the eighth inning while going 4-6 with five RBI and three runs scored. Butler's homer was his fifth of the year. He is the first Bulldog opponent to hit for the cycle since UNLV's Tony DeMarco accomplished the feat May 16, 1999. The 21 runs and 20 hits are the most by a Bulldog opponent this season.
Nevada infielder Kevin Kouzmanoff hit his conference leading eleventh home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth.
Wolf Pack junior righty Justin Sherman (6-4) scattered one run on six hits while walking three and striking out two over seven innings to earn the victory.
Fresno State senior lefty Donnie Bair (2-2) dropped his second straight decision allowing four runs on four hits and four walks over three innings.
Senior infielder Brian Pierce belted his second round tripper of the season and was 2-5 with a double and three RBI to the lead the Bulldogs at the plate.
Bulldog junior infielder Casey McGehee tallied career hit No. 229 with a double in the ninth inning and is now five shy of Greg Funk (1980-83) for eighth in school history (234). The double was also No. 38 of his career and is now four behind Brandon Gemoll (1999-2001) and Craig da Luz (1995-98) for ninth in Bulldog history with 42 two baggers.
The series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m.
