Baseball Wins Fifth Straight

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Junior righthander Cody Smith scattered three runs on six hits over a career high eight innings to help lead Fresno State to a 9-3 victory over San Jose State Friday at Municipal Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 19-13 overall and 6-1 in the WAC while the Spartans dropped to 15-17 overall and 2-8 in conference play. Fresno State has won five in a row and 14 of its last 15 games.
Smith (5-2) also tallied his team leading fifth win of the year.
Senior outfielder Scott Beshears went 3-for-5 with three RBI to record his first three-hit game of the season and lead the Bulldogs' offensive attack. Beshears clubbed his third round tripper of the season with a two-run shot in the third inning. He also added an RBI single in the seventh inning. Junior infielder Casey McGehee capped a three-run first inning with a two-run homer to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. McGehee's home run was his third of the year.
SJSU starter Carlos Torres (2-4) surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings to pick up the loss.
San Jose State infielder David Pierson was 3-for-4 to lead the Spartans at the plate.
Fresno State senior lefthander Donnie Bair is scheduled to oppose Spartans lefty Frank Esposito in the second game of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
