FRESNO, Calif. - Finishing the season strong with a 28-8 record in its final 36 games, the Fresno State softball team received an at-large bid for the 2003 NCAA Softball Championships.
Fresno State, which is one of eight sites for regional softball action this week, is making its record-setting 22nd straight appearance in the NCAA Softball Championships.
The Bulldogs enter tournament play as the No. 4 seed and will open against No. 5 seed Long Beach State (29-17).
With 12 NCAA Regional championship titles to its credit, Fresno State owns a 72-43 (.626) record in NCAA Tournament play and is the only program to participate in all 22 NCAA Division I Softball Championship Tournaments.
In NCAA Regional action, the 'Dogs are 42-20 (.677). In the WCWS, Fresno State is 30-23 (.567) with a national title (1998), four runner-up trophies (1982, 1988, 1989, 1990), three third-place finishes (1991, 1992, 1997) and three fifth-place showings (1987, 1994, 1999). In postseason play under Wright, the Bulldogs are 59-30 overall: 32-11 in regional play and 27-19 in Women's College World Series action.
The eight teams competing in Fresno, Calif., this week, by seed: No. 1 UCLA (45-6), No. 2 Georgia (55-12), No. 3 Michigan State (37-17), No. 4 Fresno State (33-20), No. 5 Long Beach State (29-17), No. 6 North Carolina (39-20-1), No. 7 Long Island (29-19) and No. 8 Colgate (30-13).
