FRESNO, Calif. - Not even a rare umpire delay could detour UCLA from winning its 2003 NCAA Regional opening round contest on Thursday afternoon.
The Bruins, who have now won 12 of their last 13, had little trouble in a mercy-rule 8-0 victory over Colgate despite a 10-minute delay in the fourth inning after an umpire had to leave the game with a strained calf muscle.
And neither did pitcher Keira Goerl, who combined with Michelle Turner on a no-hitter over six innings. Goerl worked the first four and fanned six, while Turner mopped up the final three innings in relief and struck out two.
UCLA, which rattled off 10 hits in the contest, pounced on the Raiders from the outset. After the Bruins loaded the bases with one in the home half of the first, Stephanie Ramos laced a single up the middle to drive home the first two runs and give UCLA a 2-0 lead.
The Bruins added another run in the third inning when Claire Sua's one-out RBI single made it 3-0.
After the umpire delay, play resumed with runners on first and second and one out for UCLA in the fourth. Caitlin Benyi drilled a single to left that was misplayed by the Colgate outfielder, allowing Andrea Duran and Natasha Watley to score. The Bruins tacked on their sixth run after Benyi came home on a single Sua.
Tairia Mims doubled home Benyi for the Bruin's seventh run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, and Julie Hoshizaki came around to score the final run of the contest following an error.
UCLA will face No. 4 seed Fresno State on Friday at 12:30 p.m. The two teams met earlier this year, with UCLA claiming a 5-0 victory back on Mar. 9 in Fresno.
