FRESNO, Calif. - North Carolina scored all of their runs in the fourth and fifth innings in taking a 10-2 victory over Long Island in an elimination game of the NCAA Softball Regionals in Fresno, Calif.
The win moves the sixth-seeded Tar Heels (40-21-1) into another elimination game, that coming Friday at 8 p.m. against the loser of the UCLA-Fresno State game.
The seventh-seeded Blackbirds (29-21) are eliminated from the tournament after going 0-2.
After both teams went scoreless through the first three innings, Long Island broke through with a run in the visitor's half of the fourth. Kathy Waddilove singled up the middle with two out to keep the inning alive. Leah Glenn then responded with a double that skated past a drawn-in outfield, allowing Waddilove to score the first run of the game while Glenn was thrown at third on the play.
North Carolina battled right back in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 1-1 on a one-out solo home run by Anna Tharrington. That proved to be just the start of things, as the Tar Heels went on to score five more times in the inning and ultimately put the game away.
After Tharrington's homer to left, UNC strung together three straight singles by Natashalyn Snipes, Tiffany Tolleson and Megan Welch- all coming around to score later in the inning.
A two-run triple by Jaclyn Holden highlighted the inning and she would eventually touch the plate after a single by Emily Price.
But the Blackbirds countered again in the fifth inning by pushing across a single run. Sayde Marzolf walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild throw back to first by UNC's catcher. Rosette Rough followed with an RBI double to bring home Marzolf and wound up on third at the end of the play.
And North Carolina continued the scoring pattern in the bottom of the fifth, tallying four more runs to finish off LIU. Quinn Porter had the game-clinching hit when she drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-2. Two Long Island errors helped the UNC cause in the fifth.
