Equestrian Faired Well at IHSA National Finals
The Bulldogs traveled to Murfreesboro, Tenn. May 1-4, to participate in the International Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Finals, hosted by Middle Tennesee State University. In the team competition, the 'Dogs finished 12th in English and 7th in Western out of 14 teams from around the country. Out of the 17 riders that competed, eight finished in the top 10. Amanda Smith finished third in Novice Equitation on the Flat, Stephanie Reeves finished fifth in Intermediate Stock Seat, Jessica Frazier finished sixth in Open Stock Seat, Amanda Hancock finished eighth in Novice Equitation over Fences and 10th in Intermediate Equitation over Fences, Dawn McIntosh finished ninth in Open Equitation on the Flat and 10th in Open Equitation over Fences and Becky Warmerdam finished ninth in Beginning Stock Seat. Last year, Fresno State finished third in the national judging competition, during the first appearance with a judging team. The Bulldog's next action will be May 15, when they compete in the NRHA Derby Reining Finals in Oklahoma City. Last year, rider Taylor Mason won the first ever National College Reining Championships. Maon was the only 'Dog to compete.
Bulldogs Take Sixth at Varsity Championship
The equestrian team traveled to College Station,Texas two weeks ago and competed in the 2003 Varsity Championship. In the Western competition overall the 'Dogs captured sixth place. The Bulldogs took seventh place out of 12 schools in the English competition with 21 points and sixth place out of eight schools with seven points. Georgia was the overall winner of the show. The top riders at this competition were junior Michelle Tonello with first place in Open Fences. Tonello is also to be considered one of the top riders on the team with an English Reserve Championship title from the Cal Poly show and first place in Open Flat at Cal Poly. Sophomore Taylor Mason grabbed second place in Reining, Christina Webb with fourth place in Western Horsemanship, junior Dawn McIntosh with fifth place in Open Equitation on the Flat and senior Jennifer Levenfeld with fifth place in Reining. The 'Dogs finished in eighth last season at the Varsity Championship.
'Dogs Capture Reserve Championship Title
The Bulldogs traveled to Cal Poly Pomona and competed in the Zone 8 Finals on April 5. Ten riders qualified to compete in nationals. Each rider had to place in first, second or third in order to qualify. Fresno State captured the reserve championship title with 48 points. The Bulldogs won five out of eight English classes in team competition.
