FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore righthander Joe Todoroff pitched five shutout innings in relief while allowing three hits and striking out three to lead Cal to a 4-2 victory over Fresno State Tuesday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs dropped their second straight and fell to 24-25 overall while the Golden Bears won their second in a row to improve to 27-24 overall.
Todoroff earned his first save of the season and preserved the lead for Cal starter Brian Montalbo (4-3) who scattered one run on two hits and a walk while striking out four over two innings to tally his fourth victory of the season.
Cal took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on infielder James Holder's sixth home run of the season. After Fresno State trimmed the lead in half in the bottom of the second on an RBI grounder by junior catcher Brandon Marcelli, the Golden Bears answered back in the top of the third on an RBI single by outfielder Brian Horwitz. The Bulldogs plated its second run of the game on an RBI ground out by junior infielder Casey McGehee in the third.
McGehee's RBI was No.124 of his career and he is now one shy of tying Ben Reynoso (1993-96) for tenth on the school's career leaders list.
The Golden Bears added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by designated hitter Justin Nelson. Nelson (2-4) was one of four Golden Bears with multi-hit performances on the night (Holder 3-3, Jeff Dragicevich 3-4, David Nicholson 2-3).
Fresno State senior lefty Donnie Bair (2-3) surrendered Cal's first three runs of the game on two hits and two walks and struck out four to pick up his third straight loss.
Bulldog junior infielder Ryan Haag (2-4) and junior catcher Brandon Marcelli (2-4) each logged multi-hit games to lead the squad at the plate.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday when they play host to conference rival San Jose State in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
