FRESNO, Calif. - Senior wide receiver Bernard Berrian has been picked as a third-team preseason All-American by Athlon's Sports. The team was announced Tuesday.
Berrian redshirted the 2002 year after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the opener at Wisconsin. In 2001, he posted monster numbers, pulling in 1,364 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He set a new WAC record and led the nation for all-purpose yardage with 2,776, a number that ranked second in NCAA history among wide receivers. He returned one punt return and one kickoff return for scores.
Following that 2001 season, he was chosen as a first-team All-American all-purpose player.
A Winton, Calif., native, Berrian entered the 2002 season as a Playboy All-American and the fifth-best senior prospect according to ESPN's NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper, Jr. In the first game of '02, Berrian had two receptions, including one for a touchdown. But on the final play of the first quarter, Berrian sprained his knee on a punt return. After he had not returned to action midway through the season, Berrian elected to utilize his redshirt year.
