FRESNO, Calif. - With just two weeks before the season opener at Tennessee, the Fresno State Bulldogs went through their second scrimmage of fall camp. Head coach Pat Hill ran his team through 112 plays at Bulldog Stadium.
"All in all, it was a good scrimmage," Hill said. "We need to see a lot of young guys in a lot of different situations. We didn't play a lot of the veterans today. We know what they can do. We had to get a look and make some evaluations on a lot of young players. The only way to do that is put them into game-like situations. We're not like the NFL, where we have four preseason games. We only have three scrimmages to get ready for Tennessee. What you saw here today is not what we will have when we go to Knoxville."
Several strong performances by newcomers highlighted the scrimmage. Sophomore running back Dwayne Wright, who missed the first scrimmage with a groin strain, looked especially sharp. Wright ended the scrimmage with a nifty 4-yard touchdown run.
Freshman defensive end Marlon Brisco had the game's only interception, stepping in front of a screen pass intended for freshman back Shannon Dorsey.
Junior kicker Brett Visintainer continued to solidify himself as the starter, making four-of-five field goal attempts, hitting attempts of 35, 38, 40 and 46 yards. His lone missed was from 47 yards that slipped past the right upright.
Many of the offensive starters played in only two series.
The Bulldogs return to practice Sunday afternoon before attending the annual Kickoff Dinner. Fresno State will hold two practices Monday with the final scrimmage scheduled for Tuesday. That scrimmage will be closed to the public.
Ticket packages, including two Family Value Packages, remain available through the Fresno State ticket office by calling (559) 278-DOGS or online at www.gobulldogs.com. The Portland State game tickets are $20 each. Tickets for the Sept. 5 Oregon State game are also available for $40. Beginning August 22, Oregon State ticket prices increase to $45.
