FRESNO, Calif. - Four Fresno State players have reached the round of 16 of the ninth annual Bulldog Classic, taking place this weekend at the Wathen Tennis Center.
Lucia Tallo, Lucia Sainz, Kathrin Winterhalter and Vlatka Jovanovic, all returnees from last year's WAC championship squad, won their matches today in straight sets.
After receiving a first round bye, Tallo, the tournament's No. 2 seed, breezed past Joanna Furdyna of UTEP 6-0, 6-2. With the shocking loss of top-seeded Catherine Lynch of California, Tallo is now the tournament's highest remaining seed.
Jovanovic, the sixth seed, also received a first round bye before defeating Pacific's Nicole Sakai 6-3, 6-4. The unseeded Sainz fought her way past Courtney Koenigfeld of San Jose State 6-2, 7-6 (4) while the seventh-seeded Winterhalter beat Danielle King of UTEP 6-2, 6-2.
In Saturday's round of 16 matches, Tallo will play California's Kristen Case while Jovanovic will take on Chelsy Thompson of Cal Poly. Other round of 16 matches include Sainz against eighth-seeded Samantha Waller of Cal Poly and Winterhalter battling Anna Erickson of Sacramento State.
The round of 16 matches begin at 9:30 a.m. with the quarterfinals to follow at noon.
In doubles, the team of Megan Hanner and Jovanovic won their first round match over UTEP's Danielle King and Furdyna 8-3. Unfortunately, they fell to No. 2-seeded Lynch and Jessica Shu in the second round 8-5.
The Bulldogs did have two doubles teams survive into the quarterfinals. Tallo and Courtney Jantz, playing in her first match since tearing her ACL against Cal Poly in the 2003 season opener, defeated Petra Abraham and Yasmin Kashef of Sacramento State 8-1.
Also advancing were Winterhalter and Sainz, who led Marta Gronowicz and Ann Roslund 5-2 when the Sacramento State duo retired.
Doubles action begins Saturday at 3 p.m.
