STANFORD, Calif. - Fresno State finished second with 27 points in a seven-team field Monday at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Stanford Show, checking in just behind UC Davis (28) and ahead of Cal Poly (20).
In the Open Fences competition, senior Dawn McIntosh (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished first and senior Michelle Tonello (Santa Paula, Calif.) was sixth. In Open Flat, McIntosh placed sixth and Tonello finished reserve.
Freshman Brittany Rossi (Chino, Calif.) was second in Intermediate Fences and senior Laine Hendricks (Bakersfield, Calif.) captured first in Novice Fences, while junior Julia Scrivani (Carmel Valley, Calif.) finished second and junior Anela Bird (Pukalani, Hawaii) took sixth in the same competition.
Sophomore Amy Simmons (Santa Paula, Calif.) finished first in the Section A division of Intermediate Flat. Junior Leyla Mundy (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was first, sophomore Rebecca Legris (Anaheim, Calif.) third and sophomore Elise Kolp (Woodinville, Wash.) fourth in the Section B division.
Bird also had a first place finish in the Section A division of the Novice Flat competition, while sophomore Katie Flanigan (Clovis, Calif.) finished second and freshman Shannon Ragsdale (Prather, Calif.) took fourth in the B section.
Senior Angela Klug (New Castle, Calif.) was first in the Section A division of Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter and sophomore Sara Beadle (Fresno, Calif.) finished second in the B section. In Beginning Walk-Trot-Canter, senior Abigail Kirchert (Hanford, Calif.) took first and freshman Jacklyn Alewyn (Chino, Calif.) was second. In the Walk-Trot competition, sophomore Stacey McCalmont (San Jose, Calif.) finished second.
"Everyone is riding so well after returning to school and practicing for a week," head coach Chuck Smallwood said. "To even the score for smaller teams in the competition, we had to choose one rider for each class to earn points for the team; this was such a gamble. It was very difficult to pick each rider, as they are all working so hard and riding beautifully."
The Bulldogs remain the lead team in points for their region. Their next action will be in San Luis Obispo for a double Western show, Jan. 24-25.
