Following are the thoughts of some Fresno State women's tennis players following the Bulldogs' 5-2 victory over TCU on Sunday:
Courtney Jantz
Jantz won at No. 3 doubles and at No. 6 singles. She was playing in her first dual match since tearing her ACL in last year's opener against Cal Poly. That injury caused her to miss the entire 2003 spring season:
"Today's match was very exciting for me because it is exactly one year since I have played a competitive college match due to injury. The whole day was full of excitement, nerves and anticipation. I have been waiting a whole year, watching from the sidelines, and now, I was finally able to play. Months of rehabing my knee, along with long hours of tennis training, allowed me to feel confident with my health and with my game."
"I was surprisingly not as nervous as I thought, and I played pretty well. There are always things that need improving, but overall, it was a very successful day. All of the girls fought really hard and were really supportive of each other. I can tell that this year is going to be a great one, and today was just the begining. As long as all of us can stay healthy, I know we can surprise alot of people!"
Janay Kraft
Kraft is a walk-on addition to the women's tennis team
"If you didn't make it out to our women's tennis match against TCU on Sunday, you missed out. Our girls not only played excellent in doubles but in singles as well, winning triumphantly over TCU. We were really pumped up to get out there and start the season off right."
"Our morning started out with a great practice and a donation of snacks to keep us energized throughout the day. I feel we all were confident before, during, and more importantly after each match. We were taught to go in strong and finish strong which is exactly what we did. Our support from our coaches, teammates and fans helped us along the whole way. Not to mention the great cheering from the stands. It was nice to hear and see all the enthusiasm out there. We couldn't have done it with out you. Keep it up!"
Lucia Sainz
Sainz sprained her ankle in the fourth game of her singles match and was forced to retire
"I felt really bad becuase I couldn't help my team. But I felt they were doing a great job and I was really impressed with everybody's effort! The entire team was awesome today and I'm glad for everyone. But I think I'm most happy for Courtney, because she won today after a difficult year rehabing her injury. As for me, I hope to continue improving so I can have a great year."
